An LEI can appear in supported ISO 20022 organization-identification fields to identify a legal company, financial institution or other organization. Its use depends on the bank, payment system and message implementation. An LEI is not mandatory in every U.S. ISO 20022 message.
ISO 20022 supports structured organization-identification information. Where the relevant message specification and financial institution support it, an LEI can identify the legal organization involved in a payment or securities instruction. The exact field and usage depend on the specific ISO 20022 message and implementation.
An LEI can reduce ambiguity by connecting the organization in a message with standardized public legal-entity information. It may improve entity matching and reconciliation, but it does not replace account numbers, SWIFT BICs, KYC or sanctions screening.
Before obtaining an LEI, ask the bank or financial institution whether the relevant ISO 20022 workflow accepts or requires one. Confirm which legal entity must be identified and whether its LEI record must have current status.

Not in every message. ISO 20022 can support an LEI, but its use depends on the payment system, financial institution, message specification and reporting workflow.
It can appear in supported organization-identification fields used to identify a legal entity in payment or securities data.
No. An LEI identifies a legal entity, while a BIC is primarily used to identify and address parties within financial messaging. A workflow may use both.
