How Much Does an LEI Cost in the United States? Pricing, Validity and Renewal Requirements

LEI registration cost, & renewal cost
1 Mins Read

Cost is a reasonable place to start when selecting an LEI provider. For most organizations the LEI is a modest line item - but it is a recurring one, carried for as long as the entity participates in regulated financial activity. That makes the useful question slightly broader than the headline figure.

Key Points

  • An LEI for a U.S. entity costs $65 for one year, or $50 per year on a five-year term.
  • The LEI code does not expire. The LEI record requires annual revalidation.
  • Failure to renew results in LAPSED status - the identifier is retained, not withdrawn.
  • A multi-year plan prepays annual revalidation; it does not extend validity.
  • Transfers are free under GLEIF policy, as are data updates and challenge processing with TNV LEI.

Cost is a reasonable place to start when selecting an LEI provider. For most organizations the LEI is a modest line item - but it is a recurring one, carried for as long as the entity participates in regulated financial activity. That makes the useful question slightly broader than the headline figure.

Three factors determine what an LEI actually costs an organization over time:

  • the service term selected, since longer terms carry a lower effective annual rate;
  • whether the provider is an accredited issuer or an intermediary, since an agent buys from an issuer and prices its own service on top; and
  • what the provider includes rather than charges for separately - data updates, transfers and record corrections being the usual variables.

TNV LEI is a GLEIF-accredited Local Operating Unit. In practice that means we issue and maintain LEIs directly within the Global LEI System rather than passing applications to another issuer. Our U.S. pricing is published in full below, along with what the fee covers and how renewal works.

An LEI for a U.S. entity starts at $65 for one year, with an effective rate of $50 per year on a five-year term.

LEI Pricing for U.S. Entities

TermPrice per yearTotal payable
1 year$65$65
2 years$60$120
3 years (most selected)$55$165
5 years$50$250
  • Figures are USD. State sales tax, where applicable, is itemised separately on the invoice.
  • Pricing reflects the selected jurisdiction and applicable registry fees, so an entity formed outside the United States sees a different schedule.
  • Confirm the current amount in the application portal before completing an order.

What the LEI Fee Covers

An LEI fee funds issuance and ongoing data maintenance - not the generation of a 20-character code.

Before an LEI is issued, the entity's reference data is validated against an authoritative public source. For a U.S. company that is Secretary of State records. This validation is a condition of GLEIF accreditation, and it is repeated at each renewal.

The reference data maintained in the record includes the entity's legal name, registered address, legal jurisdiction, entity status, registration authority information, and relationship data where applicable.

The LEI system is only as useful as that data is accurate, which is why renewal exists as a lifecycle requirement rather than a repeat purchase.

LEI Validity: The Code and the Record

This distinction resolves most of the confusion around LEI validity.

ElementWhat it isDoes it expire?
The LEI codeThe unique 20-character identifier assigned to the legal entityNo. It remains permanently associated with that entity.
The LEI recordThe reference data attached to that identifierThe record requires annual revalidation to keep its registration status current.

The identifier does not change. The record must be maintained.

An entity does not receive a new LEI each year. What happens annually is revalidation of the data behind the existing identifier.

Why Renewal Exists

Entity information changes - legal name, registered address, headquarters, corporate structure, entity status, parent relationships. Without periodic review, records issued years ago would drift out of line with the authoritative source.

Annual revalidation is therefore a data-quality process, not a second purchase of the same number.

What Happens If an LEI Is Not Renewed

If renewal is not completed within the required period, the registration status becomes LAPSED.

Users often search for "expired LEI" or "LEI expiry." Within the Global LEI System the correct term is LAPSED, and the distinction matters: a lapsed record has not been revalidated, but the identifier itself is not withdrawn or reassigned. Renewal restores active status using the same LEI.

Depending on the transaction or reporting framework involved, a counterparty or reporting process may require the record to be current.

TNV LEI issues renewal reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before a record lapses.

Does a Multi-Year Plan Remove the Annual Renewal Requirement?

No. This is the most important distinction when comparing LEI pricing across terms.

A five-year plan is a multi-year service arrangement, not a five-year LEI. The record still requires annual revalidation throughout that period. What a longer term changes is that the work is funded and scheduled in advance rather than depending on action against a reminder.

5-year plan ≠ five years without data review.

5-year plan = multi-year LEI management at a lower effective annual price.

That matters practically, because lapses are generally caused by missed deadlines rather than by a decision to stop holding the identifier.

One-Year vs Multi-Year: The Arithmetic

Using the rates above, five separate one-year terms at $65 total $325. The five-year plan totals $250 - a difference of $75, plus four fewer renewal deadlines to track.

For an organization maintaining LEIs across multiple entities, the administrative saving scales faster than the financial one.

This comparison uses currently displayed rates. Pricing can change, so rely on the price shown at the time of order.

Registration, Renewal, Transfer and Multi-Year Plans Are Different Things

TermMeaning
LEI transferMoving management of an existing LEI between accredited issuers, without creating a new identifier
Multi-year planPurchasing LEI services for a selected longer term

Confusing these is the most common cause of duplicate applications.

Services That Carry No Fee

ServicePosition
LEI transfer between accredited issuersFree with TNV LEI. GLEIF charges nothing for a transfer, and the 20-character code is unchanged; only the managing organization changes.
LEI data updatesNo fee at TNV LEI. Maintaining accurate reference data is the purpose of the system.
Data challenge processingNo fee at TNV LEI. Challenges are part of how the Global LEI System maintains quality.
Cancellation or withdrawal by the clientNon-refundable, as validation work has already been performed.

A transfer fee in either direction warrants a question. GLEIF charges nothing for a transfer, and TNV LEI does not charge for one in either direction.

How to Compare LEI Cost Properly

The identifier follows the same global framework regardless of issuer. What differs is the service around it.

  1. Confirm the provider is a GLEIF-accredited Local Operating Unit, rather than an agent submitting on your behalf.
  2. Ask what period the quoted price covers, and what renewal costs after it.
  3. Compare multi-year totals, not first-year prices.
  4. Check what is included - data updates, certificates, challenge handling.
  5. Confirm there is no transfer fee in either direction.
  6. Ask when renewal reminders are issued, since a missed deadline costs more than a price difference.

Before You Pay: Check for an Existing Record

A significant number of U.S. entities already hold an LEI, obtained previously for a transaction or reporting requirement and then left to lapse.

Where a record already exists, the appropriate route is renewal, transfer or a data update - not a second registration. A duplicate identifier for one legal entity is precisely what the Global LEI System is designed to prevent.

Search for your entity by legal name before applying.
